It tells the story of Hamaoka Taeko, a 52-year-old ordinary housewife who lives with her older husband and their son. Despite working hard as a housewife and a part-time worker, she finds herself being looked down upon by her family, who tell her “You know nothing about society.” However, amidst this, she begins to feel as though someone is following her or watching her with strange, suspicious glances both at her workplace and in her daily life. When Kurosaki Koshiro was 15 years old, his father was a victim in a fraud case. His father tried to kill all his family members including himself. Kurosaki Koshiro was the only family member to have survived. Due to his painful past, Kurosaki Koshiro decides to take revenge on swindlers who cheat people and take their money. During his high school days, Kokusho Hiroshi was the rugby club’s ace who attracted national attention. However, he sustained injuries owing to his self-centered and aggressive style of playing. Hiroshi is at his wits end when a man calls out that he will introduce the perfect job that comes with a fully equipped dorm and three meals a day for someone like him who is proud of his physical strength. It is to work for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force which defends the country’s peace and security. “With a name like that, weren’t you born to become a member of the Self-Defense Force?” Hiroshi initially refuses but makes a half-hearted decision to become a trainee. Despite the grueling training, this turns out to be his true calling.

Tsuda Umeko was born in December 31, 1864 and became a pioneer in women's eductation.

In 1871, Tsuda Umeko, with her father's recommendation, went to the United States to study at the age of 6. She was the youngest of the group of females to travel there. They were the first Japanese female students to study overseas at their government's expense.

11 years after studying in the United States, Tsuda Umeko returns to Japan. She wants to become a woman who is helpful to her culture, but she is shocked by the low status of women in Japan.

A young girl, Chizuru Yukimura, travels from Edo to Kyoto in search of her missing father and becomes entangled in the affairs of the Shinsengumi.
