When Ozu’s older sister and her husband suddenly pass away after an accident, 32 year-old Ozu temporarily moves to Fukushima from Tokyo, in order to look after his 12 year-old niece Mei during the summer vacation. He has a modern way of thinking but is lethargic about everything in his daily life. In Fukushima he meets the local residents who have been living positively with the aim of recovering from the Great East Japan Earthquake, as well as the immigrants who have come from outside of the prefecture in order to realize their aspirations.

As he resides alongside his artistic niece, their bond starts to deepen, and through his interactions with Mei and the many residents of Fukushima, he starts to change and grow as a person.

The story is based on the life of a japanese composer named Yuji Koseki from Fukushima in the Showa Era.

In 1909, a long-awaited baby boy was born to a family which has run a dry goods store for generations in Fukushima Prefecture. He would later become the talented composer Koyama Yuichi who wrote many famous songs. Although Yuichi was brought up as the heir of the business, he was rather dreamy and considered a child with no redeeming traits by the people around him. However, when he encountered music, it sparked joy and unleashed his gift in composing music through self-study. As a youth, Yuichi secretly put his name down for an overseas songwriting competition. This would change his destiny. He won runner-up for the song he entered for the competition. As a result, he got to know a female student who wanted to be a singer. Despite the long distance between them – Fukushima and Toyohashi – the two of them tied the knot. When they came to Tokyo, they met all sorts of people and weathered a dark period to produce a number of hit songs. However, war broke out and Yuichi had to compose wartime songs at the army’s request. It pained him that young men died in battle after singing the songs he had written. After the war, the country began to recover amid the chaos. The couple made a new era of music in an attempt to encourage the wounded through the power of music.

Arimura Kasumi suddenly gets a break from filming and returns to her hometown for the first time in a long while. Her mother Yumiko comes to the train station to pick her up and they head for the family home. She is idly chatting with her mother at home when a male stranger comes to visit. His name is Ueshima Makoto. He puts his hands together in front of Kasumi’s father’s tablet. Then her mother asks him to repair a bicycle. At Yumiko’s invitation, the three of them have dinner together.

The main character Norimiya who became an adult without having the courage to love depicts what will change as a result of reunion with former Bandman's old friend Sato Takuya and encounter with poetry.

One day, Tetsuro finds a young man. The young man, who was taken care of at Tetsuro's home, called himself Shinichi. Tetsuro and Shinichi gradually communicated with each other, and Tetsuro taught Shinichi his skills at his own woodworking plant, and the people around him accepted him. However, Shinichi had a secret that he could not reveal his real name, and Tetsuro also had a past that he could never forget.

Kasumi Takeshi has just retired and is quietly getting into his second life. He never had the luxury of a beer during the day on a weekday during his 35 years as a salaryman. But in that instant Kasumi gets acquainted with the taste of that one glass and eating alone. This is the start of his battle with eating by himself. It is an unexpectedly high hurdle for Kasumi to cross and one that he keeps fretting over.

Sakatsuki Shizuto is a mourner. He goes to scenes of accidents and mourns for the victims. Nagi Yukiyo, who killed her husband and served prison time, goes to the scene of the murder and meets Shizuto. She follows him from that time.

Other people that exists in their lives are Shizuto’s mother Junko who is terminally ill with cancer and waits for Shizuto’s return, his younger sister Mishio who is pregnant by her now ex-boyfriend and a magazine reporter who chases after Shizuto. The movie examines life and death, love and hate and sin and forgiveness through these characters. ~~ Based on the novel "Itamu Hito" by Tendo Arata.
