During a high-speed motorboat chase with a criminal, Cheung Chau police officer Wong Tai Mui gets herself trapped in a waterspout, accidentally opening a time portal. She travels back 200 years to 19th century Hong Kong, a time when the island was under Qing rule. She encounters a family of Canton pirates, led by Cheng Yat, his wife Shek Giu, and their adopted son Cheung Po Tsai. Using her knowledge of the future, which she keeps in a smartphone, she saves the pirates from a deadly naval battle against the Qing naval fleet led by Prince Man Ho, the eleventh son of the Jiaqing Emperor. Puzzled by her mysterious origins, Cheng Yat and Shek Giu remain wary of Tai Mui and are hesitant in trusting her.

At Beijing's Imperial Palace, Imperial Consort Yim and Imperial Consort Shun manipulate Man Ho to get themselves into a position of a higher power. Jaded from politics and family feud, Man Ho decides to let go of his ambition for the crown and flees the palace.

On the day the tiangou covers the sun, another waterspout appears over the Canton sea. Cheung Po Tsai helps Tai Mui open the time portal so she can return to 21st century Hong Kong, but in doing so he also falls into the portal, traveling to the future with her.

Hau Tak Sze has recently inherited his late father's social club, besides managing the club he also works full-time as a court mediator. He meets Mo Sui Yee, who is in the process of divorcing her cheating ex-husband, during one of his cases. Sui Yee moves into her aunt Lam Ah Lui's home during her divorce, she soon finds out that her ex-husband's lover also lives in the same building as her aunt. Since Tak Sze visits the building frequently Sui Yee thinks both him and her ex-husband's lover are in cohorts together to try to gain her property from her divorce. Mo Sui Yee gets a job at Au Yeung Ai's law office, Tak Sze also visits the law office frequently because he is best friends with Yeung Ai. Through her boss and new job, Sui Yee learns that Tak Sze is truly a nice guy who works hard at his job.

After the death of her husband, Chu Pik Ha returns to her maiden home with her son, in a deliberate attempt to take over the family jewelry business from her elder sister Chu Pik Wan. To prevent Ha from getting too out of hand, Wan needs her husband Ho Cheung Hing to create trouble for her sibling. Hing does not follow her instructions, but instead secretly helps Ha tackle her problems one by one. Wan soon comes to realize that Hing has never really got over Ha. Wan's younger sister Chu Pik Lam is still attending school and is too young to deal with such family issues. Wan feels a profound sense of helplessness and becomes even more frustrated when So Lai Sheung turns up suddenly claiming to be a mistress of her late father and pregnant with his baby. Out of respect for their father, the sisters agree to put Sheung up for the time being until the situation becomes clearer. Shortly thereafter, Ha discovers that Sheung is just a tool of Sang guy who has been plotting to wage a battle of will against the Chu's.

Spoilt Princess Tin Yuk makes things harder as she bullies Tong Bak Fu and others constantly, but falls in love with Tong Bak Fu later. To complicate things, Tong Bak Fu gets involved into a power struggle among the Emperor, Prince Ling and others.

During the Qing dynasty in Beijing, a powerful empress took over the throne.The story focus on four different families. Chan Siu Sang is single and all alone, his old love Chu So Ngo married the doctor that treated her son and left the police force. Then he meets Wai Ying Zi, a rookie police officer that is under Chan Sam Yuen Police Traffic Department unit. The two get off on the wrong foot due to misunderstandings. Wai Ying Zi who is eager to show off her skills seems to get into a lot of trouble. She is deemed reckless and rash. Later on, Ying Zi joins Siu Sang's CID unit which leads to the two bickering non-stop. After Siu Sang saves Ying Zi life on one of their investigations she learns to respect him and the two become friends. Chan Sam Yuen is promoted to the head of the Police Traffic Department. She and Ching Fung are also now parents to a pair of girl/boy twins, but their marriage is not as happy as it seems as the two continue to have quarrels in their marriage. With marital problems at home, Sam Yuen becomes a cold, unreasonable and mean boss at work. When a case similar to the psychotic serial rapist in the last series arises Sam Yuen starts feeling threaten and insecure even though the culprit Bao Gwok Ping is still locked up in jail. It seems Bao Gwok Ping has been communicating with someone on the outside who agreed to take on his split personality persona and continuing his crime spree. Due to Sam Yuen's carelessness her son is kidnapped and killed by the new culprit. This causes Sam Yuen and Ching Fung marriage to be in further jeopardy when he blames her for the death of their son.
