An original medical murder mystery surrounds an unknown killer coccus (bacteria), that leaves no trace in the victim's body, which enables it to be used as the perfect weapon to kill. Fujimaki Tatsuomi is a pathologist working at the Pathlogy department at Meikyo Medical University Hospital. He's looked down upon by the other staff around him, and his relationship with Maho his wife, a former nurse, has cooled down.

After a patient's suspicious death, he makes a new discovery; when the deadly bacteria "Gift" invades the body, the patient soon dies, but the "Gift" leaves no trace thereafter, enabling it to be used as the perfect weapon to kill. As a result of this discovery, Fujimaki's life dramatically changes. While searching for a way to treat his ailing wife's heart disease, he becomes embroiled in a conspiracy surrounding the killer bacteria "Gift."

An attempted murder takes place. Detective Katsuragi Keigo investigates the case. The only evidence found at the crime scene is the same DNA as Detective Keigo. He believes the criminal in the attempted murder case may be his older twin brother Yugo. At a young age, Yugo was kidnapped.

Ogikubo, Hachimanyama, Chitose Funabashi, Futako Tamagawa, Kaminoge, and Denen Choufu... Loop line 8 travels along these six towns. Despite the short distance, it is necessary to change trains and take a circuitous route. There are women living in each of these towns who waver over love that has not turned out as they wish such as one-sided love, domestic violence, and affairs. Like “neighbors” who have to go a long way around, their relationships are loosely connected. They are somehow only able to see each other’s appearances maybe because of the nature of these relationships and then wonder why things are not going well for them personally. They worry and compare with others but still wish to look ahead.

Takada Yu is an employee of a development firm. His father has favored his high-achieving older brother and been indifferent to Yu since young. So Yu craves for his father’s love and wants his recognition somehow. Then one day, Yu encounters a woman. Although it was the worst possible meeting, he gradually starts to have romantic feelings for her through work and an unexpected development. But ironically enough, she turns out to be the girlfriend of his older brother. Yu begins to realize what he truly treasures and matures as a person as he struggles with this complicated romance and with his older brother and father.

Toyama Kinshiro is a 30-year-old newly-appointed police chief at Kitamachi Police Station who firmly believes his mission as a policeman is to listen to every voice of innocent citizens and protect the peace in the community. He comes off as aloof and a bit quirky at first, but in fact he has brilliant investigative instincts and spots clues that no one else can detect. Unlike his elite career bureaucrat colleagues, Kinshiro doesn't dress or act like a stereotypical Chief Police. Rather than sitting behind a desk, Kinshiro leaves the office and literally goes around town to do the investigation work, and go the extra mile to solve any crime regardless how small or trivial. However, his unorthodox approach generates a lot of antagonism from his subordinates at Kitamachi Police Station.

While on patrol in his car, Detective Yu (Noriyuki Higashiyama) hears over the polio radio that body parts are found in the park. Detective Yu rushes over to the park. There, he sees a neck in a box.

Yu (Noriyuki Higashiyama) worked at the lost and found center of The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He is then assigned to the #12 section of the 1st investigation division. The team is known as a grave for detectives and they are filled with expelled detectives. The actual members though are excellent detectives. They have conflicts with each other, but cooperate and solve difficult cases.

Sakata Sadato (Kamikawa Takaya), who has his law practice in Tokyo, was a public prosecutor until 12 years ago. He resigned from his job at the District Public Prosecutors’ Office in order to carry out his own “justice”. His justice is to “let crimes be judged properly”. He specialises in criminal cases and has a reputation as a man of ability. One day, Sakata accepts a sudden and unexpected request, and sets foot in Yonezaki for the first time in many years with rookie lawyer, Kosaka Chihiro (Kurashina Kana). The person Sakata has been asked to defend is Shimazu Kuniaki (Osugi Ren), who was arrested and charged with a murder that occurred at a Yonezaki hotel. The start of the public hearing is the next day. Shimazu has extensive business in Yonezaki including a construction company, and is an influential man in the area. The victim is Hamada Mitsuko (Konno Mahiru), a woman whom he was rumoured to be having an affair with. All evidence including the fingerprints, bloodstains and security camera footage indicate that Shimazu is the criminal. He considered their relationship fooling around. Everyone believes Mitsuko pressed Shimazu to marry and that he stabbed her to death during a quarrel. However, Shimazu declares his innocence at a meeting with Sakata and Chihiro. He seems to have been searching for a capable lawyer and arrived at Sakata after indignantly dismissing his previous lawyer for wanting him to plead mitigating circumstances because that is unassailable. Chihiro assesses the case as a completely hopeless one, but Sakata has an intuition that something is being hidden behind the case and readily agrees to defend him. In truth, Yonezaki was once the district where Sakata worked as a public prosecutor and is also the place where the case that led to his resignation occurred. His superior at that time, Tsutsui Yoshio (Ibu Masato), has now been promoted to head of the Trial Division. The person in charge of this trial is Sakata’s peer, the ace public prosecutor Shouji Mao (Matsushita Yuki). The trial begins the next day. Mao reveals Mitsuko’s divorce with her husband, the general practitioner Watase Koji (Ishiguro Ken) after being immersed in the affair with Shimazu and skillfully corners the defence. She advices Sakata that it would be prudent for him to alter his tactics to seek a reduced sentence instead of recklessly insisting upon Shimazu’s innocence. Meanwhile, Sakata learns that Mitsuko’s son, an elementary school student, died in an accident seven years ago. He begins to reconsider the victim’s past in order to get through to the truth. However, there is no change in the situation which is not in his favour. Then, at the closing argument, the “last witness”, whom Sakata had summoned, takes the stand at last and an astonishing truth emerges … ..

Takashi Hiyama (Keisuke Koide) works as a cafe manager. He has lived alone with his 4-year-old daughter since the death of his wife Shoko (Izumi Fujimoto). Shoko was killed by three 13-year-old boys 4 years ago. The three boys were protected by the Juvenile Act, but Takashi and Shoko's mother (Mayumi Wakamura) were hounded by the media and their lives exposed. Now, even though Shoko's friend (Kana Kurashina) and cafe employee (Yudai Chiba) try to dissuade Takashi, he begins to search secretly for the three boys. Someone then makes an attempt on the boys' lives one by one. Detectives suspect Takshi as he made threats in the media 4 years ago that he would seek out revenge if the boys were not prosecuted. Meanwhile, Takashi tries to find the truth about the three boys.

Smart, good-looking guy with an appealing personality, Haruno Yoichi thought himself as "perfect husband." Ezaki Motomu is no exception, a chef whose skills prove as top class, but whose personality is sometimes problematic to those around him. Such a restaurant is not to be left unmentioned in the media, of course, and Fuji TV's "Iron Chef Japan" gives Tatsumi an offer to appear on the show. Saori goes to meet the producer of the show at the studio. After their meeting, her restaurant employees are well convinced that Tatsumi belongs on the show. Things take a turn for the worst, however, when Tatsumi suffers a subarachnoid hemorrhage. The operation is a success but there is no telling when he will regain consciousness. Owner Saori continues to operate the restaurant even without her father, under his will. However, empty seats begin to appear. Saori feels that the restaurant is in threat of closing down and decides to take on a new chief chef. Ichinose Ryo works as a salesperson for Hashiba Sales Service, a subsidiary of the mid-sized electronics manufacturer, Hashiba Electronics, which prides itself on its long history. One day, he is ordered to transfer to the company’s headquarters. Why him when he has no strong points? Hashiba Electronics designs products which its subsidiary is responsible for manufacturing. The group’s share of the market is now being lost to emerging foreign companies and it is in financial difficulty. The new company president, Matsumoto Kiyoomi, who has come from America, has his eye on Ichinose’s perseverance as a salesperson and intends to make a five-member team contemplate strategies to improve the management of the group. Ordered to submit a proposal, Ichinose and the members head to Vietnam in search of ideas for cost-cutting measures. He finds out about a new business plan, a license business in Vietnam. However, that is when he learns of the ongoing bribery behind the contract work between headquarters and subsidiary as a result of the license business. Ichinose’s former boss, Taki Shinsuke, is aware of this bribery, and had promised to keep quiet about it in exchange for a director’s position at Hashiba Electronics. Determined to push through reforms in order to correct company’s way of doing things and fulfil his own and the other members’ dreams, Ichinose gets close to but a series of big hurdles stand in his way.

Suzuhara Nao, an expert observer of migratory birds, becomes a substitute teacher at an elementary school. She's in charge of of first-year students and doesn't have much passion for her job. One of her young students named Reina becomes attached to her new teacher.

One day, Nao knows about bruises on Reina and realizes that she is the victim of child abuse. At first Nao doesn't say anything, but Nao notices more bruises with each passing day and Reina's absences from school become more frequent. Nao's maternal instincts kicks in and she decides to take care of Reina. Nao & Reina then takes a train from their native Hokkaido to Tokyo ...
