Haruko is a single mother. She has an unusual living arrangement. She lives with her son Riku, her friend Aiko and Aiko's boyfriend Sorao. One day, Yuko stays at Haruko's house to attend an art institute for the summer. Yuko is the daughter of Haruko's old friend Tomoyo. They haven't spoken for many years prior to Tomoyo reaching out to Haruko to ask if her daughter could stay with her for the summer. Haruko and Tomoyo have an uncomfortable past.

Based on actual events, this Netflix Original drama is the latest installment in the classic Japanese horror franchise Ju-on. This time, a paranormal investigator’s data reveals an eerie connection between a string of horrifying incidents that occurred between 1958 and 1997: they all stemmed from the same house. Set over the course of 40 years, the series explores the nature of these incidents, building on the established premise of the Ju-on movies and cranking up the terror to new heights. Drawing from actual recorded cases in Japan’s recent past, it offers fresh scares unlike anything J-horror fans have witnessed before.

Honjo Haruka is a rookie actress. She hears the sounds of footsteps at night in her house. When she learns of psychic researcher Odajima Yasuo from a TV variety program, she seeks counseling from him about her problem.

Ten years have passed since Eriko moved to Tokyo to become an actress. She works mostly as a waitress there. Eriko then learns that her estranged older sister has passed away. Eriko goes back to her hometown to attend to her sister's funeral. Without giving much thought, Eriko declares that she will take care of her older sister's 10-year-old son. She also learns that her older sister worked as a "nakiya" - a hired person who attends funerals and mourns for the deceased.
