Story: One day in 1934, a young Urano Suzu who lives in the Eba district of Hiroshima City in Hiroshima Prefecture, is drawing by the riverside while on her way home from running an errand. She gets caught by a kidnapper. However, she succeeds in escaping due to the quick wits of a young boy Shusaku who was caught earlier. Suzu gets home safely but the events of this day seem like a dream to her … … Time passes. In the autumn of 1943, Suzu is helping out at the home of her grandmother Ito together with her younger sister Sumi, when her aunt rushes in. She received news that someone has come to Suzu’s house in Eba to ask for her hand in marriage. A confused Suzu hurries back home. Along the way, she meets her childhood friend Mizuhara Tetsu who has gone on to the naval academy. She thinks that Tetsu must be the person. At that moment, Hojo Shusaku and his father Entaro are waiting at the Urano residence for Suzu to come back home. Shusaku says he has met Suzu before, but she has no recollection of it. She has a hard time imagining herself as a wife, but before it all sinks in, her father Juro and mother Kiseno accept the proposal and begin preparations. Suzu’s grandmother gives her a beautiful kimono to take with her to her new home. She marries Hojo Shusaku and moves to Kure City in the middle of the Pacific War. As Japan slides into a war it cannot get out of, the townspeople go on with their “ordinary” lives. Supplies are short, and family and friends get sent to the battlefield, casting a dark cloud over war-time Hiroshima. Suzu and the Hojo family battle such anxieties as they try to live each day with positivity.

But the day after his proposal, Akiko leaves the engagement ring behind and vanishes all of a sudden. Why did she leave him and why did she hide her identity during the time they spent together? Toshiro tries to search for Akiko but realises that he does not have any information that would provide clues. Meanwhile, Akiko resigns from her job at the place where she had told Toshiro that she worked and goes to work for the company that her mother runs. Toshiro gathers information on Akiko from Instagram and in the process of following her traces, his true nature along with the truth about her are revealed.

Yokai are major figures of Japanese folklore, spirits that occupy virtually everything in the world around us. Some, such as the turtle-like Kappa, are relatively well known, but there are hundreds of others, maybe even thousands. They are the spiritual element of everything in the world around us, and as such they deserve to be treated with respect. But humanity isn't much good at respect. We consume, destroy, wear out and discard with no thought to anything but ourselves, a situation very distressing to the yokai, so distressing that the villainous Kato - accompanied by his deadly assistant Agi, played by Battle Royale and Kill Bill's Chiaki Kuriyama - has concocted an extreme response. Kato is gathering up yokai of all sorts, preying upon the harmless and the weak, and forcibly fusing them with discarded metallic junk to create vicious killing machines that he plans to unleash on humanity. All that changes when he receives word that his wife was involved in a minor bicycle accident. That was enough to make Mittang quit his job to stay close to his one and only love, who after the accident, is no longer the same Rumitang he knew. His lovely wife exhibits phenomenal memory recall powers, but with one little glitch, cute Rumitang transforms into a craggy-faced, but well-known mnemonic specialist called Tamachi Kouji. Luckily, the metamorphosis is only temporary. As the lovebirds begin working at an odd job business where they can be together 24/7, they encounter quirky characters like a two-timing secretary, a neighbor's husband with a roving eye for the ladies, and deal with Mittang's vertically-challenged father-in-law. As a result, they find themselves involved in even quirkier situations.

On the advice of Professor Tsukuba (Furuya Ikkou), a physician she respects, houseman Togano Makoto takes training at forensic medicine classes. She gingerly steps into a classroom with a strange atmosphere. The eccentric but outstanding forensic professor Matsuzaki Tojiro gives her a polite brush-off and leaves the place. Makoto trains under Kosaki in a story that throws the ethical conflict surrounding autopsies and human relationships into sharp relief.

Kaji’s career slumped after he met the freelance surgeon Daimon Michiko. He seized this opportunity to revive his career and triumphantly returned to Maebashi 27th Branch Hospital. What he did not expect were allegations of a surgical error seven years ago. To make matters worse, a 6-year-old girl Shimada Nanami showed up at the hospital with a letter written by Misato. It said, “This child is the treasure that God gave us on that miraculous night.” Kaji could not ignore Nanami who called him “daddy” and decided to let her stay at his apartment for the time being. Meanwhile, he tried to get in touch with the neurosurgeon Kida Mitsuhiko who had been a colleague at the hospital, in order to review the operation that took place seven years ago. However, it turned out that Kida had already canceled his mobile phone contract and resigned from the hospital. While Kaji was feeling at a loss, Osawa experienced another headache and visited Maebashi 27th Branch Hospital. Before long, the rumor that Kaji had an illegitimate child spread within the hospital because of head nurse Furuya Sanae. Then some facts regarding Nanami’s mother came to light along with the shocking truth about the surgery seven years earlier.
