Hee Ju and Tae Kyong are friends who work at a hotel. During a violent bank robberty, Hee Ju is unaware that her cash is stolen by sneaky Dong Wook who happens to be next to her at the time of the robbery. Tae Kyong in the meantime is attracted to Seung Joon, a hotel guest. Pil Yong has been forever a lowly public official of 7th grade in Jeonju, South Korea.

3 years ago his wife Hyo Kyung collapsed of a cerebral infarction largely due to him. Pil Yong took his son to a relative and now takes care of his wife who has difficulty in moving. Pil Yong wants to be promoted to a deputy director in the higher 5th grade before he retires.

At the height of the 16th-century Chosun Dynasty, a pair of rural male actors - boisterous, macho Jang Seng and quiet, feminine Gong Gil - travels to Seoul and team up with a struggling acting troupe. When their irreverent show, complete with enough bawdy humor and gender-bending to make a contemporary audience blush, mocks the famously hedonistic king, they get more than they bargained for. After being promptly arrested, they're given a chance to spare themselves if they can make the king laugh. A series of black garbage bags filled with dismembered body parts begin to show up around the city: in an elevator, on a highway, at the edge of a basketball court, and rendering the victims nearly impossible to identify. The killer's motive is a complete mystery. Leading the investigation is Detective Cho, a burnt-out cop trying to redeem himself with this case. Setting up a special squad dedicated to these gruesome murders, Cho and his partner, the veteran Detective Oh, map out the order of the murders, interchanging the parts like pieces in a grotesque puzzle. Mystified by the surgical precision of the dismemberments and finding a medical antiseptic called "Hexamedrin" spread all over the bodies, the detectives start suspecting a doctor or a biologist as the killer.

A break opens up when Cho is led to a beautiful and enigmatic young artist, Chae Su Yeon, whom all the victims have had relations with. But besides this revealing breakthrough, Cho is far from solving the case. Still not having found a motive, Cho is grasping for many clues. As the murders continue, Cho is drawn closer to Su Yeon and begins unravelling her tortured past, leading to new questions and suspects. Cho and Oh subsequently discover that her father, a famous painter, mysteriously disappeared years before. Cho decides to investigate her late college classmate and current colleague Ki Yeon, and her friend, Sung Min.

While Cho questions Ki Yeon, the fragile Su Yeon is attacked but manages to escape. After being released from police custody, Ki Yeon disappears, and the next morning Detective Cho is notified of the fourth murder. Under the rainy urban landscape of Korea's capital, another garbage bag is discovered on a highway. This time, the corpse is a head-less Ki Yeon.

"Birdcage Inn" is a story about Jina, the new call girl at the Birdcage Inn. The Birdcage Inn is a hotel that is operated by a poor family - a father, mother and their two kids. The family relies on Jina's income as a whore to pay the expenses that keep the hotel alive for business; as well as putting food on the table. Still, the family is barely getting by and practically living very low-class. There's not much known about Jina, but one thing is clear, she's not happy with her job status (is there a whore who is?). When Jina's not working, she takes the time to enjoy the beauty of looking at the ocean. Jina is also a terrific artist, but God only knows why she doesn't use her artistic talents instead of selling her body. It's apparent that Jina is obviously torn from something that happened in her unexplainable past.

Hyemi, the daughter of the family, resents Jina from the beginning. Not only does Hyemi hate the fact that her family runs such a scummy business, but she blames Jina for being the primary tool. Jina notices Hyemi's rude attitude towards her, but still tries to win her affection by doing nice things for her and buying her items she can't afford. Still, Hyemi doesn't budge. The plot thickens when unexpected things *cough* start to happen: Jina's old pimp shows up out of the blue demanding that he still gets a cut of her earnings, Hyemi's young brother develops a small crush on her which leads to trouble, Jina gets involved with an Andy Lau-wannabe, and worst of all, Hyemi's boyfriend gets in between Hyemi and Jina.
