In the deep of the night, Indonesian migrant fisherman Abdul-Adl brutally murders the captain and his family. The appointed indigenous public defender Bao Ju treats the case with contempt. His team also includes Jin Ping, who has a bright future but also a manipulative father, and Leena, an Indonesian nurse who is harassed by her employer. They team up, translating for and defending the murderer. Bao Ju’s team finds evidence that implicates Zhen Xiong, the owner of a fishery group. Witness collusion, a biased judge and disagreements on mental evaluation worsen the situation. Bao Ju goes to his ex-lover Qing Xue, the Minister of Justice, for help. Jin Ping and Leena become intimate. Bao Ju’s team finds the key witness, Suprianto, but he disappears after receiving death threats. Overwhelmed by setbacks, Bao Ju loses the case. To overturn the decision, Bao Ju has to regroup, but more obstacles appear. Bao Ju discovers evidence that can halt the death penalty, but Qing Xue approves the execution. With limited time, Bao Ju must come up with a perfect solution to save his client.

Lin Mo pursues two cases: Four-Faced Buddha and Name of the Rose that not only takes place in Bangkok but also in Kaoshiung.

The third case about the Ghost's Invitation takes the story back to Bangkok and then to Tokyo. The investigator on the job is none other than Yetian Hao'er who teams up with Asia's five-member team that includes Lu Jing Jing and rookie policewoman Sa Sha.

The failing universal healthcare system continues to put the lives of patients and doctors at risk. One victim resorted to blowing up the subway system to bring awareness to the issue. Dr. Xiao and others rushed to scene to treat the survivors. While the doctors tried to save lives, the hospital used the disaster as an opportunity to boost their rating during the annual medicare assessment.

The Zhou family has high hopes in giving birth to a son, but was disappointed when Zhou Ji Wei was born a girl, making her the third daughter in line. Because she was a disappointment to the family, she was only ever given hand me downs from her sisters. She felt no love from her family, but luckily she feels the love of a family from her neighbor especially Dai Nai Nai. Seven boys form a tight knit gang lead by Yen. They drink beer, smoke cigarettes and ride motorbikes: behaviour pretty much typical of teenagers. The movie is focused on exploring the nature of their friendships and how they change through time.

Although this is predominantly a film about male relationships, the role played by Xiao Yun (Yen's girlfriend) is interesting. Just as the boys struggle to come to terms with the world and their expectations, Xiao Yun struggles to break free from her relationship with Yen. Tang, Yen's best friend, fancies Xiao Yun but never has the courage to tell her. In the end Xiao Yun shows more courage than Tang in dealing with the relationship. The movie shows the difficulties both men and women face in their gender roles.

Xu Yi Jing and Xu Yi Zhen were identical twins who grew up always relying on one another. When Xu Yi Jing is murdered, the suspected killer commits suicide just prior to arrest, leading everyone to believe that the case is closed.
