In the Southern Song Dynasty, there is turmoil both externally in the country while infighting and killing among various sects are common in the martial art world. The family of KOWK CHING (LEUNG KA YAN) and WONG YUNG (AU YEUNG PUI SAN) lead a tranquil and peaceful life on Peach Blossom Island. Fate has led CHING to meet YEUNG GOR (ANDY LAU KAK WAH), son of his old friend YEUNG HONG, when he returns to the mainland to look for YUNG's father WONG YEUK SHI. CHING sympathizes with GOR since he is an orphan, and brings him back to the Island.

The drama follows the lives of a large, rich, and influential Chinese family living in British Hong Kong during the 1920′s and 30′s, a time when eastern and western cultures clashed, and women began to fight for a position in society to change the traditions of a woman always coming second behind a man. Although wealthy and renowned barrister, Chung Cheuk Man (Damian Lau) studied abroad in England and enjoyed a western lifestyle, deep down he is still a traditional Chinese man. Similar to many upper class during that era, Cheuk Man has many wives and mistresses, a symbol of his status. His first wife Koo Sum Lan (Mary Hon) was born from a wealthy family. His second wife, Aisin Gioro Yee Yin (Idy Chan) is an former princess from the Qing dynasty. His third wife, Yvonne Yik (Elena Kong) came from a rich banker family. Peking opera singer Hong Tsz Kwan (Tavia Yeung) is the fourth wife. The fifth woman in Cheuk Man’s life is Chiu Dan Dan (JJ Jia, who was only interested in living a luxurious and materialistic lifestyle.

With the Shaolin and the Beggars' Sect being the two biggest sects, Mo Yung Fuk and his father Mo Yung Bok schemes to take control of the two sects in order to restore their Kingdom of Yan. The second season introduces Hui Juk, a Shaolin monk, as the third and last protagonist as the three male protagonists' lives interconnect with one other, with a satisfying yet tragic ending to the series.

When Lok Yin (Alex Man) furthers his study in U.S.A., he is jailed for 7 years because of manslaughter. His girlfriend, Ching Jan (Idy Chan) then get married with his best friend, Ling Fung (Wilson Lam). After going back to Hong Kong, Yin determined to modernize hi family's department store business. But the luck is not at his side, first, his elder brother Lok Man (Hui Siu Hung) and sister-in-law (Ma Qing-yi) are killed in a traffic accident. Then his father is died because of heart attack.
