Song Xing Chen is a 29-year-old doctor with a difference: While all of her co-workers are focused on performing well and making money for the hospital, she cares more about her appearance and fashion. Some think she used her good looks to win herself a top position at the hospital. But she drops a bombshell on her colleagues at her promotion dinner – by announcing she wants to quit!
Now, instead of following the path her family set out for her, she has decided to go her own way. As she begins her “new” life, she witnesses a fearless man rescue a helpless dog from a window ledge. This man turns out to be a lifetime singleton and single-minded rescue team leader named Su Qing Che. Later, their paths cross again – as they meet (and bicker) on a blind date. The police are investigating a case that involves a death directly caused by a rare bug known as the bullet ant. In order to clear his name, Tan Jingtian, an Insect toxicology graduate becomes involved in the bizzare investigation and collaborates with forensic doctor Jin Ling. As they dig deeper, they uncover the mystery behind his own identity.
Along with police captain Chen Han and the other detectives, they trace every clue as they solve one case at a time to uncover the murderer that has been in hiding for many years.
Three veteran cops who once dominated the police force have to come up with innovative methods to deal with a new kind of crime.
Known at the trident, Cui Tiejun (Chen Jianbin), Xu Guozhu (Dong Yong) and Pan Honghai (Hao Ping) who have all retreated to the second line of defence suddenly come upon a complex money laundering scheme. They face off with an opponent from 20 years ago and various forces seeking to take advantage.
Crime has found new means of hacking to obtain large sums of money. The trident employs the best weapons at their disposal as they resort to old school sleuthing skills in an attempt to bring down the crime syndicate in one fell swoop.
A rather simplistic payoff doesn't prevent Beyond Our Ken from being an excellent film, as well as another assured effort from director Edmond Pang Ho-Cheung. Gililan Chung and Tao Hong are excellent, and the emotions the film conveys are remarkably felt. Not much occurs, but the road travelled makes this one of 2004's better films.
Gillian Chung of Twins reveals hidden depths beneath her squeaky-clean popstar persona in the refreshing and darkly emotional Beyond Our Ken. Directed by Edmond Pang (Men Suddenly in Black), the film details the burgeoning friendship between two obvious romantic rivals: Ching (Gillian Chung), spurned girlfriend of the eponymous Ken (Daniel Wu), and Shirley (Mainland actress Tao Hong), Ken's current flame. The two girls meet when Ching approaches Shirley needing help. Ken took some nude photos of Ching and posted them on the Internet, and she wants them back. Since Shirley currently has an in with Ken, she's the obvious candidate for help. Yet why would the current girlfriend wish to help the ex?
