Before Himura Kenshin met Kaoru, he was a fearsome assassin known as Hitokiri Battousai. "Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning" tells the story of a young Kenshin who became the number one assassin for the Ishin Shishi (which later became the "Meiji era") who fought against the Shogunate during the last days of the Tokugawa era, and how he got his famous "X" mark on his left cheek.

In the early days of Himura Kenshin as Hitokiri Battousai, he one day met Yukishiro Tomoe, a beautiful young woman who looks serene but always carry a sad face. Dako is a con woman. She stays at a suite in a luxury hotel and schemes to take money from vicious wealthy people like yakuza bosses and evil businessmen. She works with Boku-chan and Richard. Boku-chan is a sincere and timid young con man. Richard is a veteran con man.

Dako is able to master knowledge from various professions in a short period of time and disguises herself as someone working in that field. Along with Boku-chan and Richard, they carry their plans using fantastic teamwork.

Haraguchi Motoko works as a temp at a bank. To pay off debt that she inherited from her parents, she also works as a hostess at a club in Ginza. Motoko Haraguchi is finally able to repay the debt.

At this time, there's chatter that the temp employees will be laid off at the bank. Motoko Haraguchi decides to carry out a scheme she has prepared secretly. She transfers money from accounts opened illegally to her bank account. Altogether, Motoko Haraguchi embezzles 180 million yen. Using her “Kurokawa no Techo” (Black Leather Notebook) which has a list of the illegally opened accounts, she fights against bank branch managers and opens a club in Ginza.

A still-single 40-year-old Nakahara Aki has a successful career but struggles when it comes to love. The Kashiwagi family's life story continues. Koume finally gets into an university, while Masaya decides to travel round the world to save as many people as he can with his skills. Meanwhile, Kazuya builds a strong relationship with his colleague, Miki, who then moves in with the Kashiwagi family after her mother's death, adding to the strength of the family together with the other new tenant, Shinjou. Goro Zaizen and Shuji Satomi are assistant professors at Naniwa University Hospital. Goro is a brilliant surgeon who will do anything to make his way up the corporate ladder. On the other hand, Shuji is a physician who earnestly devotes himself to medical research. Though the two doctors have contrasting personalities and are considered to be rivals, they highly recognize each other's skills. The entire medical department is restless while preparing for the election to choose a new Surgical Department Professor. All Goro has on his mind, is how to win the election. Meanwhile, Shuji is looking after a patient who apparently has pancreatic cancer. He carries out tests on the patient cautiously, and is very careful in telling the patient of the cancer. However, Goro barges in on their conversation, and out of the blue, tells the patient he has cancer, and that he needs an operation right away. Shuji is furious at Goro's rude attitude, and yells, "Doctors are not God!" Goro ignores this, and starts laying the groundwork for the operation. But when Goro finds out that the Director of the Medical Department has already given a diagnosis of stomach cancer, he cancels the operation. He feels that pointing out his boss's misdiagnosis will only hurt him in the upcoming election. Shuji however, is determined to save the patient's life and go on with the operation.

Snagging a new job at Heart Sports' sales department, Kanji transfers to the Tokyo office, where he meets his new colleague Rika and is reunited with his best friends from home—Mikami and Satomi. Mikami, Kanji, and Satomi have been friends since they were children, having grown up in the same small town. Mikami is Kanji's best male friend and Satomi is their platonic female friend whom both Mikami and Kanji have had a crush on since high school. After seeing Mikami forcedly kissing Satomi, Kanji felt despair, however, then quickly developed strong affection for Rika who was always energetic, funny, encouraging and caring. Their relationship was rather unstable to begin with, given Kanji's history with Satomi as well as Rika's (not so) secret affair with her and Kanji's boss Sendo [this affair was much more of a determinant in the original manga than in the drama, when Rika got pregnant bearing Sendo's child (not shown in the drama version), which was one of the reasons why Kanji chose Satomi over Rika]. In the meantime, denied by Satomi who thought Mikami was just playing with her, Mikami's attempts on pursuing his med school classmate Nagasaki had also been with much frustration.

Everyone has secrets or dreams they can't tell anyone else. Nevertheless, we work and live everyday like any other day. Ezaki Motomu is no exception, a chef whose skills prove as top class, but whose personality is sometimes problematic to those around him. As the culinary master the most important equation to him is "Ingredient x Cooking method = Taste". No less, no more. Such a restaurant is not to be left unmentioned in the media, of course, and Fuji TV's "Iron Chef Japan" gives Tatsumi an offer to appear on the show. Saori goes to meet the producer of the show at the studio. After their meeting, her restaurant employees are well convinced that Tatsumi belongs on the show. Things take a turn for the worst, however, when Tatsumi suffers a subarachnoid hemorrhage. The operation is a success but there is no telling when he will regain consciousness. Owner Saori continues to operate the restaurant even without her father, under his will. However, empty seats begin to appear. The Aoshima Company is a precision machine maker, located in the suburbs of Tokyo. The company is a medium sized corporation. The have a conference once every week to report achievements made and the prospects for the company. At the conference, President Takashi Hosokawa (Toshiaki Karasawa) gives a menacing look, while executives shout at each other. After President Takashi took his job, the economy significantly worsened due to a financial sector slump. The Aoshima Company suffered because of this and faces difficulties. President Takashi then tells executives to abolish the baseball team. The executives are shocked. President Takashi informs the executives that he has heard the bank may cancel their loan from the next session. To show the bank that they are trying to improve their situation he has decided to cancel the baseball team. The baseball team needs 300 million yen to exist. Their baseball team was once well regarded, but they re now a burden to the company. President Takashi must persuade the Chairman and Founder of the company Tsuyoshi Aoshima (Tsutomu Yamazaki) before he can abolish the baseball team. He goes to talk with Chairman Tsuyoshi. The Chairman asks President Takashi “do you have  'ism' as a company president? If you want to fire people, you need to have 'ism' as a company president." President Takashi tells him that he doesn't have 'ism' right now, but no matter what he will protect the Aoshima Company. That is his 'ism.' A bigger crisis ensues.

July 1590, Odawara. Toyotomi Hideyoshi's army had surrounded the Odawara Castle for over three months, hoping to conquer this last obstacle to his dream of the country's unification.

Standing at the gate of the castle, a lone man facing the menacing guards shouted out: "Do not throw your lives away. Treasure living!". Not long after, the castle gates opened and the reigning lord surrendered. The name of that man is Kuroda Kanbee. An excellent military strategist, he worked hand-in-hand with Hideyoshi to unify the country.

Kanbee's family had fled to Harima, and were relatively poor. As the protege of Kodera Masamoto, Kanbee was very much trusted and relied upon by his lord liege. However, Kodera was suspicious of Kanbee's father, Mototaka, thinking that he was trying to usurp his power. One day, Kodera decided to match-make Kanbee with the daughter of Kushihashi, another one of his vassals. Kushihashi's son, who was of the same age as Kanbee, intensely disliked Kanbee and objected to the match. Since this was the order of Kodera, they had no choice but to marry the youngest daughter, Teru, to Kanbee. On Kuroda clan side, in order to assuage their lord liege's suspicions, Mototaka decided to step down, and made Kanbee the head of the clan. Kanbee was but 22 years old. Kanbee and Teru were married, and they were blessed with a son soon after, but when many years had passed and yet Teru couldn't seem to conceive a second child, Kanbee decided to adopt the young children of his vassals as his proteges who became known as "Kuroda's warriors".

When Kanbee turned 30, a revolutionary young lord was slowly laying siege to all the various shogunates, aiming for a unified Japan. Harima became the place where the clash between Oda and Mori Terumoto was set. Kanbee was very attracted to Oda's unification plans, and had gone to Gifu Castle to meet up with him. There, he became acquainted with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and soon became Hideyoshi's right-hand man, marking the birth of Gunshi Kanbee.

It was the year 1993, a couple of years after Japan's economy bubble burst. Life was tough for Fuyuki Aki, as she tried to prove herself in a society where men were still favored over women for promotions and even in simple things like regular permanent jobs, the women were often passed over for men. Amidst all her struggles and frustrations in her job, her ex-boyfriend Sato Yasushi, who happened to be her colleague, announced his upcoming marriage to the girl from the admin department. Aki had broken up with Yasushi two years ago, as she had despaired over her career in the male-dominated company, feeling helpless thinking about her futile efforts to progress her career. Her anger at her situation transformed into anger at all men, which in turn caused her to disregard Yasushi's feelings. Unexpectedly, Yasushi's announcement made her felt out of sorts.

On the day of the wedding, at the entrance welcoming the guests was Yasushi's mother, Sachiko. Aki had gotten on very well with Sachiko back when she was dating Yasushi, but since their break-up 2 years ago, she had lost all contact with her. On that day, Sachiko had pressed a letter into her hands while they were greeting each other. In it Sachiko wrote, "I had believed that you and I were bound by fate. Aki-san, why did you make the wrong move?"

For women, love, marriage, children, and death... in a time of upheavals, Aki had turned her back on all these things. Be it a beautiful or harsh fate, she chose to create her own destiny.

A 19-year-old girl burdened by a cruel destiny, a mother tormented by a tragic past, and a 41-year-old man living in atonement, and a relationship that brings strength in dark times. ‘Iki mo Dekinai Natsu’ is as much a social drama as it is a story about friendship, parents and children, and about what makes a family.

Takei plays said girl who learns that her mother never recorded her birth in their family register. While falling into despair after finding out the secret about her birth yet wholeheartedly trying to live to regain ‘herself’, she happens to run into a former journalist (Eguchi) who is suffering from a deep scar in his heart himself. Although they could be father and daughter, they start to form a bond that could be described as friendship... or, between the lines, something more? During this "breathless summer", they go through a number of things that will stay in their hearts forever.

It's a story about a veteran tax bureau inspector, Haruma Sosuke (Eguchi Yosuke) and a skilled tax evasion consultant, Murakumo Shuji (ARATA).

Haruma always thought that the tax evader's world and his modest life had nothing to do with each other, but one day they would become connected.

A lowly but academically diligent warrior named Bessho Hikoshiro finds himself unable to move up in the world due to the stifling caste system of the Bakumatsu era. After being expelled from the household into which he was adopted through marriage and separated from his wife and son, he moves in with his disapproving elder brother and his wife. He meets his old class rival Enomoto Takeaki, now a commander of a naval ship, and is later told by a kindly noodle shop owner that Enomoto's rise in social status came about after he prayed at a shrine in Mukojima.

Eiji Nishie, who lives in Sapporo, is a prep school student who aims to become a medical school. He reunited at a dental clinic with a woman who saved the other day when she was about to be raped by bad guys on the beach.
