Joe provides food and shelter while Nick looks for a job and searches for his lost love in this strange new city. Joe introduces Nick to some fellow Chinese immigrants and each of them help the newcomer by showing him how the black market and other underworld activities can help him survive. The menial jobs available to them are difficult and pay very little. Nick considers the possibility, but he's not a criminal yet.

The six intertwined love stories are set in an unusually hot summer and feature some A-list actors like Nicholas Tse, Barbie Hsu, Jacky Cheung, Rene Liu, Daniel Wu and Vivian Hsu. There?s also an appearance of two kissing fishes voiced by Joey Yung and Jan Lam Hoi Fung! Of all the couples, the one that would move most hearts would be the love story between a middle-aged driver played by Jacky Cheung and a foot masseuse played by Rene Liu, in which the relationship starts with a mobile text message that was sent by mistake. There are a lot of funny interaction and also positive, heart-warming moments between these pairs. A point to note is that Barbie Hsu (?Connected?, ?On His Majesty?s Secret Service? who has always been known for her sensuous, feminine looks with beautiful long hair, turns into a rebellious biker chick in this movie! Her smoky eyes, boyish short hair, tattooed arm and tight clothes will surely take you by surprise. Other appearances include Shawn Yue, Gordon La and Charlene Choi.

A dutiful cop, guilt-ridden over saving the life of a gang leader, becomes obsessed with bringing down the crime syndicate of the man he saved. 

Johnnie (Lau Ching-Wan) heads a police surveillance team working to uncover corporate crimes like insider trading. When members of Johnnie's own team start to use this information for their own personal gains, Johnnie finds himself protecting those around him. A murder plan then intercepted by the team puts them further in a moral quandary.

A rather simplistic payoff doesn't prevent Beyond Our Ken from being an excellent film, as well as another assured effort from director Edmond Pang Ho-Cheung. Gililan Chung and Tao Hong are excellent, and the emotions the film conveys are remarkably felt. Not much occurs, but the road travelled makes this one of 2004's better films.

Gillian Chung of Twins reveals hidden depths beneath her squeaky-clean popstar persona in the refreshing and darkly emotional Beyond Our Ken. Directed by Edmond Pang (Men Suddenly in Black), the film details the burgeoning friendship between two obvious romantic rivals: Ching (Gillian Chung), spurned girlfriend of the eponymous Ken (Daniel Wu), and Shirley (Mainland actress Tao Hong), Ken's current flame. The two girls meet when Ching approaches Shirley needing help. Ken took some nude photos of Ching and posted them on the Internet, and she wants them back. Since Shirley currently has an in with Ken, she's the obvious candidate for help. Yet why would the current girlfriend wish to help the ex?

The story takes place in a beautiful pavilion in 1930's Suzhou. Jade is a famous songstress courtesan, marrying into the noble house. She develops a dubious relationship with a female cousin of the family and also being admired secretly by her butler. LAN, the cousin, is a modern woman who wants to be independent and serves her country, but when she meets the charismatic Shing, an official from the North, all her plans go astray. These two women's love bears no fruit with their men and in the end, they have only each other to lean on.

Jet (Stephen Fung) is a handsome gay hustler whose sex appeal seems to know no bounds. Everyone wants to make love to him, but he is in love with no one but himself. Things change drastically when he notices what seems like a young couple in a shop, Sam (Daniel Wu) and Kana (Shu Qi). At first sight, he falls in love with Sam and begins following the two around. Jet's friend Ching, who is also a hustler, runs a personal ad in a gay magazine for Jet, imploring Sam to contact Jet. At first, Jet is angry with Ching for not asking him, but his wrath subsides quickly when indeed he meets Sam again in what seems like a chance encounter but actually is an outcome of the personal ad. Sam turns out to be a police officer and Jet starts to befriend him, hoping this will turn into a relationship. But Sam does not seem to notice Jet's intentions. Unbeknownst to Jet, Sam had an affair with pop star K.S. (Terence Yin) five years earlier. At the same time, Ching had been in unrequited love with Sam (then calling himself Fai) when the two were office workers. Ching comes to his apartment shared with Jet when Jet and Sam are there, instantly recognizes Sam as Fai and is furious with Jet for stealing his beloved. Sam runs back to his apartment, but Jet pursues him. The two kiss, but they are interrupted by an unknown person at the door. Later, Sam believes the person to be his father. Unwilling to face his father's disappointment, he kills himself. Jet lives on as a hustler and receives a letter knowing that Sam loved him.
