Set during the seizure of the throne by Sejo of Joseon in the year 1455, the movie follows the life of Nae-Kyung.

Nae-Kyung (Song Kang-Ho) hails from a ruined noble family. He travels around Joseon and studies physiognomy. He is able to asses a person's personality, mental state, habits and, consequently, their future, by just studying their face. He lives in seclusion with his son Jin-Hyeong (Lee Jong-Suk) and brother-in-law Paeng-Hun (Cho Jung-Seok). Nae-Kyung hopes to one day become a public officer, even though it is virtually impossible due to his family's failed background.

A little girl is kidnapped and murdered in the jurisdiction of gang buster detective Yang Chun-dong, who fights against the gangs for three years now. Also the case of the murdered girl is up to him. During the case, he realizes the crime scene is the same as the mysterious wall paper he saw once on the street. He starts tracking down the painter, a young man called Joon. But when Chun-dong is arresting Joon, he realizes that this boy has the so-called 'psycho-metry' ability to see the past by touching someone or something with his right hand. His whole life he had lived alone because he thought about his ability as a curse. So, as a monetary, he tried to help to solve crimes. However, for the police Joon is the main suspect for the murder case. But Detective Yang believes Joon and that is only witness of the murder. Television producer Choi Yu Jin hears of the inmate and researches his story for an upcoming news report. Yu Jin then comes across a mysterious woman named Jang Hye Jin who makes doenjang jjigae that brings tears of joy to those who tastes her recipe. As Yu Jin delves further, he learns of Hye Jin's heartbreaking relationship with Kim Hyun Soo.

"A Story of Bangja" is based on the popular South Korean folktale "Chung Hyang." The movie then twists the story around to ask what would happen if Lee Myong Ryong was unattractive, while his servant Bang Ja Jeon was attractive? The sudden death of her mother brings Myeong Eun back home to Jeju island. There she meets her sister Myeong Ju and her daughter Seung Ah, still living at their old home, and Hyeon Ah who has lived with them for over 20 years like a relative. With the absence of her father, and her complex about being an illegitimate child, Myeongeun tells Hyeon Ah she will start looking for her father after the funeral. Myeong Ju accompanies her sister because of Hyeon Ah’s persuasion and her sense of duty as an older sibling.
