The 61st NHK Asadora Drama is Asuka. Set in Kyoto in the home of a traditional Japanese candymaker, Asuka is the story of one young girl's dream to one day walk in her father's shoes and become a top candymaker in the male-dominated world of wagashi (Japanese confectionery). Asuka grows to be a healthy, adventurous young girl with a deep curiosity and, a desire to become a candymaker like her father. This NHK drama is one of the best in years with an excellent cast, a well-developed story based on extensive research into the traditional worlds of candy making and the tea ceremony in Kyoto, and beautiful scenery and settings in Kyoto and the surrounding areas.

Inspector Sugishita Ukyo from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Missions Unit makes brilliant deductions and cracks difficult cases with his partner Kaburagi Wataru who used to be a career bureaucrat from the Ministry of Justice.

It is the autumn of 2019, one year since Miyamoto Akiko (Ayase Haruka) re-entered the workforce. Her job is based in Osaka and she has been living in apart from her step daughter Miyuki (Kamishiraishi Moka) who is in Tokyo. Headhunted by a major consulting firm Acxel Business Partners, Akiko has been working energetically. She has achieved such remarkable results that the 10 years she devoted to raising Miyuki after her husband Ryoichi (Takenouchi Yutaka) passed away, is not a noticeable blank. Miyuki is now a lovely first-year university student who still does things at her own pace. She joined the university’s entrepreneurship club and continues to work part-time. Her relationship with childhood friend Kuroda Hiroki (Inowaki Kai) seems the same even though she rejected his feelings a year ago. One day, Akiko is suddenly fired and goes back to Tokyo. She visits Miyuki’s apartment only to see Mugita Akira (Sato Takeru), the owner of Bakery Mugita where Miyuki works part-time, come out topless from the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist. To make matters worse, a baby boy is clutched in his arms. Then Miyuki returns home. Akiko jumps to the conclusion that this baby is their child. Miyuki and Mugita deny it, leaving Akiko confused by this perplexing situation.

Saionji Hajime serves the wealthy Ijuuin family. He graduated at the top of the London school for butlers. As the perfect butler, housekeeping skills and management of the mansion go without saying. He mastered martial arts and also has knowledge of all sorts of genres including science and history. Saionji has established a firm relationship of trust with Yuriko, the widow of the head of the Ijuuin family. The 45th NHK Taiga Drama is Komyo ga Tsuji.

Kazutoyo lived during the end of the Sengoku period (1546-1605). He was the first feudal lord of the fief of Tosa on the island of Shikoku. He served Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Chiyo (1557-1617) was his wife, and was known in history for her dedication and devotion to her husband (like Matsu was to Toshiie in Toshiie to Matsu). She is the daughter of a samurai who served the feudal lord Asai.

Next door to Chuo TV's offices is "Manhattan," a coffee shop for aficionados. The owner's (Masahiro Matsuoka) passion for coffee is almost a sickness and all he wants is for his customers to enjoy their coffee. He is a man of few words. If he has to say something, he gets his waiter Shinobu Gamo (Takashi Tsukamoto) to speak on his behalf. Owner's real name is unknown. He would prefer to be addressed as the shops' "Master" rather than its owner - not that anyone is aware of this. He gives his all to coffee. Despite his wishes, his regular customers don't really come to taste the coffee. They are there because of love. They use his shop as a place for dates, marriage proposals and break-ups. One day, she appeared at the coffee shop all dressed up and tipped a cup of coffee over Bessho's head. The master watches developments in Nobuko's love life with great interest. He wants her to enjoy good coffee so decides to help her with her love life. But no sooner has he decided to do this that other love-related troubles begin to emerge. Be it screenwriter Maki Chikura (Aiko Morishita), voice actor Satoshi Doigaki (Suzuki Mastuo), new announcer Shiori Emoto (Wakana Sakai), actor Eiichiro Funakoshi (played by himself) or the waiter Gamo. The 35th NHK Taiga Drama is Hideyoshi, the story of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, a daimyo warrior, general and politician of the Sengoku period He unified the political factions of Japan. He succeeded his former liege lord, Oda Nobunaga, and brought an end to the Sengoku period. The period of his rule is often called the Momoyama period, named after Hideyoshi's castle. He is noted for a number of cultural legacies, including the restriction that only members of the samurai class could bear arms. Hideyoshi is regarded as Japan's second "great unifier".

Shinobu Takamura (Asami Mizukawa) is an aspiring painter. One day, she is accused of using counterfeit money.
