Minami Hiromi is an FBI agent visiting Japan from the US for a limited time. Minami lost his sight due to an accident in the past and he is called the "last man" in the FBI, referring him as the last trump card to end a case with his strong sense of analysis, smell, and touch. Godo Shintaro has been assigned to attend to Minami. From a family that has served as the Commissioner of the National Police Agency for generations, Godo has an extraordinary sense of justice and is willing to go any lengths to catch the criminals. Gota Nakaido is a detective based at the Minatomirai Police Station in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Prior to joining the police force, he spent 8 years working as a high school Physical Education (PE) teacher after graduating from university. His decision to become a detective stemmed from his determination to combat the negative influences that lead students astray.

Although Gota aspires to receive a promotion, he faces challenges due to his struggles with academic studies. However, his passion lies in apprehending criminals, and nothing brings him more joy than when victims express their gratitude for his efforts in catching wrongdoers.

Kagawa Eiji is a detective who looks more like a gangster. He previously worked at the Metropolitan Police Department investigating organized crime groups, but he was recently demoted to the Sakuramachi Chuo Police Station without given a reason why. Kagawa Eiji desires to return to the Metropolitan Police Department to get answers. Meanwhile, he works with Detective Hasumi Kosuke at the Sakuramachi Chuo Police Station. Detective Hasumi Kosuke carries a big secret that has never been revealed.

A case comes up, where a housekeeper, working at a professor's house, is stabbed to death. At that time, a rookie detective, Mizuki Nao, begins to work with them. Kagawa Eiji and Hasumi Kosuke are bothered by her. She is the daughter of the assistant commissioner at the Metropolitan Police Department. They begin to work together.

The story is now set in a sci-fi-esque Xinyuan Civilization Year 253 where rising crime rate and its relation to "zero-degree empathy" have become a topic of interest. The murder of a deliveryman leads to a criminal organization and the culprit turns out to be someone with "zero-degree empathy". Police officer Luo Wei Zhao who is in charge of the case finds that things are not as simple as they seem. In subsequent cases, the wealthy Pei Su also seems to be caught in the middle.

Ryujo Hoshiko comes to detective Kindaichi Kosuke’s office with a request. She would like him to investigate an attempt to poison her father, Baron Ryujo Kiyohisa. Hoshiko says this may have something to do with the issues of succession such as the peerage and fortune. Accepting the request, Kindaichi and Hoshiko are driven by a servant of the Ryujo family to the mansion in Nagano Prefecture. On the way, the car comes to an abrupt halt on a country road. They have stumbled across the dead body of Kazuma, the husband of eldest daughter Ryujo Hanayo. After assisting with the investigation, Kindaichi and Hoshiko finally reach the mansion. The police detective Hibino is questioning a grieving Hanayo, her mother Shimako, second daughter Yukiya and her husband Hoshino Natsuhiko. Then another man arrives. It is Akechi Kogoro. He received a warning from the 20-Face Phantom who is targeting the golden statute of a Buddhist deity which is in the Ryujo’s possession. Kindaichi and Akechi end up face to face again. Kindaichi is conscious of it, but Akechi acts relaxed. From the next day, Kindaichi searches for clues in the murder. On the other hand, Akechi pursues the whereabouts of the Phantom. Kazuma, who had been the possible successor of the peerage, had no reason to commit suicide. Everyone in the family believe he was murdered. In a search after that, it is discovered from a storehouse within the mansion that Kazuma vomited blood. There is a high chance it is the same poison administered to the baron. Based on the same-titled novel, the drama is set in the year 1964, the year the Olympics were held in Tokyo. A nation trying to rebuild its economy post world war II, Japan was eager to show the world what it had to offer. Amidst all the excitement and enthusiasm, two fires had broken out consecutively; at the private residence of the Chief of Police, Suga Shuichiro, and then at the Nakano Police Academy. However, both incidents were hushed up, and even Detective Ochiai Masao, from Division One MPD (Metropolitan Police Department) had to find out about it from his fellow colleague. Ochiai was puzzled as to why no investigations were being carried out and it soon came to light that prior to the first fire at the Chief's home, a threatening letter had been sent to the MPD. In view of the upcoming Olympics, everyone at the MPD were feeling jittery over the letter and the arson, and thus a team was set up to ensure the safety of the public during the event. Ochiai and his team mates were to carry out the investigation secretly. Information came to Ochiai, that some 25 tubes of dynamite were stolen from a gunpowder factory. While questioning the owner, Ochiai was introduced to Shimazaki Kunio, a poor student from Akita prefecture, attending Tokyo University and working part-time there. Suspecting him of the crime, Ochiai started digging around into Shimazaki's life and was surprised to find out that his own sister, Yumi, was actually dating Shimazaki!

Shen Yu, the daughter of a corrupted official, marries into the Zhou manor. However, her "groom" Zhou Yue turned out to be a girl disguised as a guy. After revealing their secrets to each other, they decide to become sworn sisters and use their fake marriage in order to protect each other's identity. At the same time, Qi Zhang and Gao Mo, who are implicated by the case of Prince Rong, also begins to secretly investigate the case. The four of them work together to find out the truth.
