This drama is loosely based on one of Korea's oldest folk songs. Suh Dong was the illegitimate son of the Paekche emperor and with the help of Princess Sonhwa, the daughter of the emporer of the Silla Kingdom, he went on to become the emporer of Paekche against all odds.

The three main characters of this drama pose the question of what a “righteous life” is in the era of political and social turmoil of the late Joseon Dynasty, when progressive thinking and the Confucian social reform movement “Silhak” began penetrating into Joseon from the Qing Dynasty. It was also a period when the 400-year Joseon Dynasty was gradually losing ground, unable to respond to external and internal changes in the wake of the Japanese invasion of the 16th century and the Manchu War, resulting in clashes between the king, who dreamed of restoring his authority through powerful reforms aimed at improving the lives of grass-root people, and conservative political forces, which felt threatened by the self-justified royal authority.

It is late 1598, shortly before the Battle of Noryang, the final confrontation of the Imjin War. The remnants of the Japanese invasion force are desperate to go home, but are also driven by personal motivation to beat their greatest adversary, Admiral Yi Sun-sin, once and for all. Self-serving Ming generals and Joseon officials also fear Yi's growing popularity and its impact on their personal base of power. These incidentally combining ambitions fan King Seonjo's paranoia and make him eventually fear that Yi might come after his throne, and after a series of what he calls acts of high treason, he decides to have Yi arrested. Yi, on the other hand, is determined to teach the Japanese a lesson for the atrocities they committed on the Korean people, and despite orders to remain quiet while the Japanese are to pull out without anymore bloodshed, he rallies his naval force and prepares for the upcoming battle. The battle commences and the Japanese are dealt a crippling blow, but Yi is fatally wounded by an arquebuse bullet. As he lies dying, the plot backtracks on the important events of Yi's life, from his boyhood to his military career, his efforts before and during the Japanese invasion, his disgrace at the hands of his king, and his reinstatement, back to the battle of Noryang, where he succumbs to his wound just as victory is declared.

This drama depicts the turbulent period spanning from the reign of King Taejo (born Lee Seong Gye), the founder of the Joseon dynasty, to King Sejong.

Jin Hyuk is a genius neurosurgeon with a cold and severe attitude in his interactions with other people due to his personal pursuit of perfection. Through a mysterious power, Jin Hyuk finds himself transported back in time 150 years. The only son of Namwon’s magistrate Mong-ryong(Choi Si-won) is chased after by the policemen as he attempts to help the chivalrous robbers. The place he hides into happens to be where Hyang-dan(Seo Ji-hae) is. Hyang-dan covers for Mong-ryong and they fall in love instantly. Meanwhile, Wol-mae(Bang Eun-hee) comes up with a plan to get Chun-hyang(Lee Ji-soo) married to Mong-ryong, and Chun-hyang has no choice but to take part in the plan as she has grown up as Chun-hyang’s servant. Hyang-dan has no choice but to follow the plan due to her social rank. As rumors spread that Mong-ryong and Chun-hyang are seeing each other because of Wol-mae(Bang Eun-hee)’s plan, Mong-ryong’s father orders Mong-ryong to go to Seoul using the civil service exam as an excuse. As a cover-up to hide her love for Mong-ryong, Hyang-dan decides to get married to Bang-ja(Heo Jeong-min), who has been good to her to win her over. On the day Mong-ryong is to leave for Seoul, he finds out about Hyang-dan's wedding and runs to see her.

The next day, Mong-ryong announces to his father(Moon hoi-won) that he will go to Hanyang to take the exam. After he leaves for Hanyang, Hyang-dan comes back home as Chun-hyang’s servant again. In the meanwhile, the new magistrate Byeon Hak-do (Lee Seong-min) takes post. He tyrannizes the town and takes goods from the commoners while trying to suppress the chivalrous robbers. Then, as Byeon Hak-do requests Chun-hyang (Lee Ji-soo) for bed service, Wol-mae(Bang Eun-hee) asks Hyang-dan(Seo Ji-hae) to go instead.
