Fat Tin (Myolie Wu) is an overweight daughter to a wealthy man in the Philippines. Worried for her daughter's future that she won't get married because she's overweight, Fat Tin's father searches for and finds what he believes to be an ideal life partner for her daughter. However, unable to feel anything for her husband-to-be Mak Ka Fai (Kenneth Ma), the idealistic Fat Tin runs off to Hong Kong. Life in Hong Kong is totally different from the life she left. People are more materialistic, and appearances are everything. Fat Tin's weight makes her the object of ridicule from Tai Hei especially, the owner of the store she will eventually work at during her time in Hong Kong. Tai Hei (Andy Hui) is a successful designer and the owner of several chain stores selling his own design brand. A perfectionist, he feels that appearances are everything and anyone unable to take care of their own appearance cannot be trusted to take care of anything important. The series is based loosely on Jin Yong's novel Ode to Gallantry. Twins Shek Chung Yuk is cunning, smart, and a fast thinker, while Shek Po Tin is more sentimental, naive, and innocent. The twins were separated at birth. Their parents were known as 'Black and White Swords' in the mo lam world. After killing the godson of "Ghost", Ghost returned on the twins' one month birthday to avenge his godson. This '70s ghost drama began with Wang Jian, a policeman, discovering neighbor Huang Yinggu's ghost who has been trapped in a braid inside the police station for over ten years. Yinggu slowly reveals her story to Jian. She was wrongly sentenced to death for a crime she never committed. Yinggu's nephew Ye Jiasheng committed the murder and heartlessly set Yinggu up and made her his scapegoat. Fate is always ironical and cruel, as Yinggu discovers. She soon gets involved with Ye Jiasheng's affairs a second time. First, she manages to persuade her daughter Sun Minghua (Irene Wong) to break off with Ye Jiasheng's son Ye Zuguang, who is a flirt. Later, Ye Zuguang commits mass murder (locking people inside a building, preventing them escaping from the fire). Minghua is on the scene coincidentally and Jiasheng decides to frame her for the crime. Wang Jian, by then a police inspector, is in charge of this case and knows Minghua is innocent and Zuguang involved. He tried his best to solve the case, to ensure justice for the dead and innocent (Minghua) but Ye Jiasheng, a senior police inspector, just seems to be too smart and cunning for Wang Jian to deal with. Ye Jiasheng is willing to do anything (framing Minghua, falsify evidence, killing witnesses) to get his son off the hook. Yinggu's ghost finally meets face to face with the arrogant Ye Jiasheng, who isn’t even scared and taunts Yinggu saying she ought to blame her sorry fate instead. Justice prevails however, Wang Jian finds new evidence to charge Zuguang with and by then a remorseful Zuguang finally confesses to the crime. Ye Jiasheng dies a sorry death from cancer and Huang Yinggu is assumed to have reincarnated. There is a sub-plot toward the end where Wang Jian's wife Baoyan (Maggie Cheung) accepts corruption money from Jian’s superior who asks her to take on behalf of Jian. Wang Jian finds out and Baoyan decides to turn herself in. The show ends with Baoyan being released from jail and a family reunion with Wang Jian and family.

The story goes on where Siu Tong and a lawyer Wong Ying Kit get married. However, when they return from their honeymoon, the nightmare begins. First, Kit's brother suspects that Siu Tong is having an affair with Ka Yuen. Then when Siu Tong had a miscarriage, her own husband suspects her because she didn't tell him that she was pregnant but she told Ka Yuen. All this suspicion leads to Siu Tong's tragic death. It turns out that it was Kit's brother who killed Kit's first wife and Siu Tong. Bo Yin also believes that Siu Tong is still in love with Ka Yuen and decides to leave Hong Kong again. However, Ka Yuen caught up with her and showed her a video tape that Siu Tong made before she died. At the end of the video, Siu Tong claimed that she loved her husband the most and that she loved him more than she loved Ka Yuen. Bo Yin and Ka Yuen finally got back together.

Tsung Ka Yuen is an excellent police officer whose team always seems to get assigned to the most interesting cases in all of HK. He works well with his police colleagues and is looked upon by everyone as the big brother. Ka Yuen is also very close to his dad, brother, and stepmom. Because the crimes that Ka Yuen's team deals with are mostly murders, in comes the forensics unit! The intelligent and modern forensics examiner, Pauline Lip Bo Yin. Her beauty and brains can be a bit intimidating so she too has not had much luck at love. As with Ka Yuen, Pauline also has an interesting family history. Her father was a well-known bomb expert who died when she was quite young. Pauline has remained extremely close with her mother, sister, and niece.

Au Yeung Chun is a stubborn yet diligent man who does not accept defeat. Due to debt problems at home, he takes refuge in a boxing gym owned by an acquaintance, and it becomes his second home. There, he meets like-minded people and is inspired to become a top boxer in Asia.
