One day, Yuriko visits her father Ryosuke without advance notice. Ryosuke is surprised by her sudden visit. Yuriko doesn't give any reason for the visit. Ryosuke only learns that Yuriko isn't sure how long she will stay. They haven't talked as father and daughter in a long time. They begin to live together in a nervous, but warm atmosphere.

Sasai Ryosuke, a translator who used to be a university lecturer, stays in a small Western-style house that stands at the back of Kishimojindo Temple in Tokyo’s Toshima ward. He has been living alone ever since his wife passed away. While he has perfected both housework and cooking now, the same cannot be said about his work.

Kasahara Sachiko’s (Kitagawa Keiko) parents died young and she lives in a Tokyo apartment with her only sister Nobuko (Koike Eiko), a journalist for a newspaper’s cultural department. She has not found a job and has been interviewing at a number of companies. On this day, Sachiko bids farewell to Nobuko who is leaving for a holiday at Lake Towada in Tohoku, and sets off for another company interview. This should have been the usual scene of the two sisters who share a close relationship. But that night, Sachiko gets news that Nobuko was killed in an accident, and for some reason, Nobuko lost her life in Nagano which is a different place from what she had told her. Nobuko’s colleague and fellow journalist Yoshii Ryoichi (Mukai Osamu) suddenly shows up before a grieving Sachiko. He sets out to investigate the mystery of Nobuko’s death together with Sachiko, but she does not know his true intentions. Meanwhile, Sachiko starts to work at the newspaper as her sister’s replacement and goes to meet the cultural figures that Nobuko had been in charge of when she was alive. Among these people with habits which are unimaginable from their glamorous appearances, is the pediatrician Nishiwaki Mitsutaro (Sawamura Ikki) who writes a column for the newspaper. He seems to be the greatest philanderer in celebrity circles even though he has a wife (Nishida Naomi), and calls Sachiko out many times. But right after that, Machida Tomoe (Sakai Wakana), who had been her sister’s colleague in the same department, commits suicide. She leaves behind cryptic words for Sachiko regarding Nobuko’s death. “There is someone who should take responsibility”, “All the more if it is a famous person”. Sachiko’s hunch is that her sister’s death is connected to someone prominent that she had been dating while alive. However, the more she attempts to learn the truth, the more “suspects” meet suspicious deaths one after another until she no longer knows who is her friend or foe. Sachiko has unwittingly been sucked into a deep darkness as if she is wandering about in a dark, dense sea of trees with no exit.

Frank speaking with a poison tongue, he doesn't think twice about ripping a newly met person apart with his sharp stinging words. Kohinata Shion is an attractive, level-headed girl, in her 30's but yet to have any marriage prospects nor boyfriend. On a mission from her senpai, Himuro Kotaro, Shion arrives for a working farmstay at Oba Farm.

Tsugumi Dozono (Nana Eikura) works at a large electronics company in Tokyo. She likes to spend long vacations at her grandmother’s house in the countryside. One day, her grandmother passes away and Tsugumi Dozono decides to live in her grandmother's house while working from home. She finds a strange middle-aged man in the house. The man's name is Jun Kaieda (Etsushi Toyokawa).

Jun Kaieda tells Tsugumi that he is her grandmother’s ex-student and her grandmother gave him a key to the annex house. Tsugumi, who does not know the exact relationship between her grandmother and Jun, begins to live with him.

Sokoi Takehachi and Tsumura Aki are journalists working for the "Weekly Dodongo". Their editor, Yamazaki Jiro, had assigned them to stake out former state assemblyman Okase Shohei, who is about to be released from prison. 7 years ago, Okase was found guilty of misappropriating state funds amounting to 100 mil yen. However, only 70 mil yen were accounted for during the trial. Yamazaki has a hunch that upon his release, Okase will be retrieving that money from wherever he had hidden it. Both Takehachi and Aki had tailed Okase to the racecourse, and from there to a street near Kagurazaka, Tokyo, where they lost him. Next thing they know, the news world is abuzz with the rumor that Okase had found the body of a strangled man at a cemetery in Katsuura, Chiba. Yamazaki's instinct tells him that the murder has something to do with the unaccounted for money, and so he decides to bring Takehachi along with him to call on Okase. They pay a visit to the Nishida Stables, where they are introduced to the stable hand, Suekichi Hideo, the stable owner, Nishida Ryuzo and one of the racehorse's owner, state assemblyman Tateyama Torahei. Yamazaki decides against bringing up the matter of Okase, which puzzles Takehachi, but yet Yamazaki does not share his reason for doing so with him. Not long after, a trunk is found in the forests of Mizusawa, Iwate. In it is a corpse of a man. How is the corpse related to Okase? Why was it stuffed inside the trunk?

Sakuragi Ippo (Mukai Osamu) is a contract staff of the human resource rental company ‘Yujou Monogatari’ which dispatches “friends, significant others and families” to lonely customers in Tokyo. Ippo’s mother, Taiko (Tanaka Yuko), now lives alone in the family home by the seaside of the Miura Peninsula. Ippo has a younger sister, Honoka (Murakawa Eri), who is a bus tour guide. But they not even know each other’s contact information although they are both in Tokyo. Despite Taiko’s frustration at her children who will not even come back for New Year, she firmly watches over the house and acts as if her long-lost husband and children will come home anytime. One day, Taiko receives a phone call from Honoka who says, “I want you to meet the other party’s family because I’m getting married”. At the same moment, Ippo is masquerading as a family member of the elderly Murakoshi Kotoko (Kusamura Reiko), a regular ‘Yujou Monogatari’ client who lives alone. A “job” falls into his lap. He goes back home to the seaside town where his mother is waiting. Then his father unexpectedly turns up after being out of touch for 20 years … …

These days, the term “homeless” has taken on new meaning. There are youths referred to as “net cafe refugees,” who have neither a job nor a place to live, but who find themselves hopping around internet cafes. One such refugee is a 20-year-old girl named Chisato, who lost her mother at a young age due to sickness. On the other hand, Soga Iori (Ayano Go) is a member of the SAT. Described as superhuman, he prides himself in his sharpshooting and is the SAT’s best sniper. Soga was once assigned to a police precinct because he had aspirations to become a detective. Before long, he arrested three robbers and attracted attention as one of the promising newcomers. He is cool and collected, has great concentration, endurance, perception as well as combat ability; the embodiment of the SAT’s ideal male.

Hayami Keigo is a promising young heart surgeon at a university hospital, but is made to examine patients at a clinic in the mountains during summer on the orders of his superior. At a harsh environment 2,000 m above sea level, there is a very small quantity of testing equipment and medicine. It is a culture shock and setback for Keigo who is active in advanced medical care and the use of cutting-edge equipment. This is a place detached from modern medical care where doctors make all diagnoses by touching, looking at and talking to patients. Koyama Haruka was raised by parents who ran a mountain lodge, but when she was 5, her mother died in an accident on the mountains. That influenced her to become a nurse in Tokyo. However, one day, an incident prompts her to escape from Tokyo and return to the mountain lodge. It is the same time that Keigo arrives at the clinic.

Eisuke Yamate (Osamu Mukai) is busy preparing dishes with two other men for the opening of his French restaurant "Le Petit Chou." Chie Okusu (Miori Takimoto) is a college student who dreams of meeting her perfect match and having dinner with him at the French restaurant like "Le Petit Chou" for her birthday. On the day of Chie's birthday, she goes to "Le Petit Chou" with her female friend. When they arrive, they are surprised to find that the restaurant looks completely different from what they saw in the magazine. Furthermore, the name of the restaurant has been changed to "Gasterea."

Chie and her friend then notice a "Le Petit Chou" flyer nearby, which points passersby to another location. They go towards the direction that the flyer points and soon notice a man, Eisuke Yamate, hanging the "Le Petit Chou" flyers along other buildings. They decide to follow Eisuke Yamate and he eventually goes inside a warehouse. When Eisuke comes out, he brings out an electric guitar and proceeds to smash it into the ground. Eisuke then notices Chie and her friend and tells them that "Le Petit Chou" will have its opening in the evening. Chie and her friend then realize that the warehouse they are standing in front is "Le Petit Chou."

3 months before...

Eisuke Yamate is a member of rock group "Rock Head," which he formed with friends 15 years ago. His mother is a chef who specializes in French cuisine. Eisuke was also born with a natural talent for cooking and until the age of 13, dreamed of becoming a French chef. Eisuke even learned to speak French and practiced cooking different dishes. At the age of 13, Eisuke heard rock music for the first time and felt an immediate connection with the music. Soon afterwards, Eisuke dreamed of becoming of a rock star, while forgetting about his culinary dreams. By the age of 29, Eisuke's band "Rock Head" still hasn't achieved very much success. The band's lead singer then quits the group. The other two members of "Rock Head" start talking about pursuing other lines of work. The group attempts to make a pact that if they are still not recognized by the age of 30 they will quit for good. Even before that pact can go into place, the band decides to breakup that day.

Later that same evening, Eisuke goes to his mother's French restaurant "Le Petit Chou." A man named Tokio Aso (Goro Inagaki) tells Eisuke's mom that he could renovate the restaurant to make her more money, but Eisuke's mom turns his offer down. When Eisuke arrives, he tells his mother that he now wants to work as an assistant chef at her restaurant. Eisuke's mother encourages him to do what will make him happy. While they are having their discussion, Eisuke's mother suddenly collapses and dies. After his mother's funeral, Eisuke tells his father that he will work at "Le Petit Chou" as its chef. His father informs Eisuke that he already sold the restaurant to Tokio Aso after he promised to keep the restaurant exactly like it is. When Eisuke and his father walk over to "La Petit Chou" they start to hear loud sounds coming from the direction of the restaurant. They run over to the restaurant and discover that is being demolished. Eisuke and his father confronts Tokio Aso about his promise, but Tokio Aso just ignores them. Eisuke then decides to open a restaurant at a warehouse with the same name as his mom's place.

Eisuke brings over the two former members of his band "Rock Head" and they prepare for the grand opening of "La Petit Chou," which will have its opening on the same day as rival French restaurant "Gasterea.

Yukari Hayasaka is a high school student who has become tired of her life of constant schooling. She then comes across a group of student fashion designers in need of a model for their "Paradise Kiss" clothing label. Yukari knows nothing about the fashion world and is taken back by the group's eccentric ways, but she soon comes to admire their free thinking ways and ability to pursue their dreams with a one track mind.

Maho Minami (Shiori Kutsuna) returns to Japan after studying in New York. Her half brother Ryusuke Minami (Hiro Mizushima) is an ultra talented guitarist. Maho & Ryosuke then meet Koyuki (Takeru Sato ), a fellow young teen whom Maho takes interest in. Soon enough, Ryosuke and Koyuki form a 5 piece rock band named "Beck," while Maho and Koyuki become involved in a romantic relationship.

The band starts to play live shows and grow an enthusiastic following. The release of their debut CD helps to further the band's popularity. People start to notice Koyuki. The band then endures a producer's planned conspiracy and other hardships. Beck then receives an offer to play at a rock festival, but with the unusual stipulation that the band may have to dissolve ...

Sae is a high school student who is studying hard for her college entrance exams. She lost her father when she was very young and so lives her mother Ryoko in Hokkaido, Japan. Her father Kemimichi once planted a dogwood tree in their garden after he found out he had a terminal disease and could not watch Sae grow up. She hopes to enter a university in Tokyo.

She then meets Kouhei, who attends a specialized high school teaching fishery. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as a fisherman. These two young people meet and have a long distance relationship. Although their love is strong it does not last.

10 years later these two people have a miracle.
